Summary

This article is derived in part from a lecture I gave to the Second International Early Engines Conference held at the Black Country Living Museum in October 2021. I have only outlined here some of the earlier illustrations of Newcomen engines and have not included coal mining examples. I would be pleased to hear of any other examples that readers might know of. Whilst this text is very similar to that used in the Newcomen Society’s Links article the illustrations have been re-sourced to provide some variety from that article.
